Characterization and influence of production factors on growing and finishing pig farms in Brazilian cooperatives R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Caio Abércio da; Agostini,Piero da Silva; Dias,Cleandro Pazinato; Callegari,Marco Aurélio; Santos,Rita de Kássia Silva dos; Novais,Aliny Kétilim; Pierozan,Carlos Rodolfo; Gasó,Josep Gasa.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify and quantify, through mathematical models, the main factors of production in growing and finishing pig units linked to three Brazilian cooperatives located in Western Region of Paraná State that influence the parameters of daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio. The records of 216 growing and finishing farms from 2010 to 2013, representing 1,533 batches, and totaling approximately 1,025,000 pigs, were evaluated. Thirty production factors related to the management, health, installations and equipment, nutrition, genetics, and environment were considered. The number of pigs per pen, the feeder model, the origin and sex of the animals, and the initial and final body weights were the factors included in...

Control of ammonia emissions in naturally ventilated dairy cattle facilities in Portugal REA
Pereira,José; Trindade,Henrique.
We conducted a study of the processes associated to NH3 emission in naturally ventilated dairy cattle facilities, having described factors that regulate NH3 emission, as well as methodologies for measuring these emissions at these facilities. Appropriate techniques to mitigate NH3 emission in facilities located in regions with warm climates were also identified. The most effective mitigation techniques with simple implementation include strategies associated to: (i) installation design and flooring, which lead to reduced emissions, (ii) excreta pre-excretion, namely the use of diets with optimized crude protein content and increased milk production at farm level; and (iii) excreta post-excretion, particularly by changing the conditions of environmental...

DIFFERENT GENDER DIVISION PATTERNS FOR SWINE HOUSING IN WEAN-TO-FINISH SYSTEM REA
Massari,Juliana M.; Vercellino,Rimena do A.; Curi,Thayla M. R. de C.; Moura,Daniella J. de; Medeiros,Brenda B. L.; Salgado,Douglas D'Alessandro.
ABSTRACT This study aimed at identifying the best gender division pattern for swine at nursery stage, through the evaluation of behavioral and environmental parameters. Three treatments were established to achieve our objective: single-sex housing of 26 surgically castrated male pigs; mixed-sex housing of 13 castrated males and 13 females; and single-sex housing of 26 females. Environmental and behavioral data have been recorded. It was used an ethogram to make an inventory of behaviors and that was used in multivariate analysis. Bite addiction differed statistically among treatments, and the lowest occurrence was in mixed-sex housing. Results of the multivariate analysis suggested that regardless of the treatment chosen, relative humidity is positively...

Does economic endogeneity of site facilities in recreation demand models lead to statistical endogeneity? AgEcon
Chen, Min; Lupi, Frank.
Different kinds of endogeneity problems in Random Utility Models of recreation demand have been studied in previous literature. Some site characteristics, like facilities, could be endogenous in an economic sense due to the interplay of supply and demand. That is, it may be that more popular recreation sites tend to have better site characteristics since managers with limited budgets would be more willing to invest in them. If recreation site improvements are more likely to occur at the more popular sites, then might this economic endogeneity cause problems for econometric models linking site demand to facilities. In this paper, we use Monte Carlo simulations to test whether this economic endogeneity will lead to statistical endogeneity.

Does Economic Endogeneity of Site Facilities in Recreation Demand Models Lead to Statistical Endogeneity? AgEcon
Chen, Min.
Random Utility Models of recreation demand are widely used to relate demand and value to the characteristics of recreation sites. Although some kinds of endogeneity problems have been studied in previous literature, no study has addressed the potential problem with site characteristics that are endogenously supplied. Some site characteristics, like facilities, could be endogenous in an economic sense due to the interplay of supply and demand. That is, more popular recreation sites tend to have better site characteristics since managers with limited budgets would be more willing to invest in them. If recreation site improvements are more likely to occur at the more popular sites, then this economic endogeneity might cause problems for econometric models...

ÉLELMISZER-KERESKEDELEM A BALATON KIEMELT ÜDÜLŐKÖR-ZETBEN AgEcon
Peter, Erzsebet.

SWINE '95 PART I: REFERENCE OF 1995 SWINE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AgEcon
Bush, Eric J..
This report is the first of a three-part release of national information from the second National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) swine study, the Swine '95 Grower/Finisher. The first national study, 1990 National Swine Survey, focused on farrowing sows and preweaning piglets. For the Swine '95 Study, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collaborated with Veterinary Services (VS) to select a producer sample that was statistically designed to provide inferences to the nation's swine population. Data for this report were collected from 1,477 producers in sixteen major pork production states, accounting for nearly 91 percent of the U.S. hog inventory and nearly three fourths of U.S. pork producers. By percent of pigs contained,...

The design of an in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory and its importance in risk prevention: applicability of UV radiation BABT
Izquierdo,Enrique Gea; Velasco,Carlos Ángel Benavides; Escudero,José Vicente Maeso; Rodríguez,Antonio García.
This study addressed the environmental control of an IVF laboratory and the potential repercussions that the presence of certain physical, chemical and biological agents could have on workers' health or on the tasks they carried out. The design of the laboratory and its facilities contributed to an improvement in work quality and minimised the environmental-related risks. The preventive measures adopted had an influence on the carried out actions.
